Growing up, it seems like all parents were obsessed with seeing their little ones in pumpkin costumes. How cute it was so see these tiny faces emerging from the bulbous, orange, polyester gourds. I was subjected to a costume like this as well. The pumpkin excitement lives in the nostalgic stories my family tells every Halloween, but the actual Halloween pumpkins can be enjoyed by everyone at the upcoming Pumpkin Fest now presiding in Laconia. This blog can tell you all about the web places you can look to find updates on the event so your pumpkin enjoyment doesn't merely exist in the pumpkin humiliation for your aging kids!
New Hampshire residents remember the news stories from last year's Pumpkin Festival in Keene when college students from various schools around the state started riots in the streets throwing glass bottles and creating a safety problem for residents and attendees. Because of this scare, the town of Keene refused to grant the use of the town to the event. On May 21st, the Keene Pumpkin Festival Facebook page shared a quote from Pumpkin Festival Organizer, Ruth Sterling about the riots: "The real issue--college-age students' behavior and the role college administration should have in keeping the city civilized--is not getting the attention it merits. I am disappointed. I think as a community we need to call for new leadership in Keene at the level of Mayor, city manager, police chief and City Council. And I know from the phone calls I receive that I am not alone. I am hopeful that leaders will emerge who dare to lead and not duck, dodge and hide from our challenges--which are not pumpkins--but could be resolved in order to bring back the pumpkins." But Laconia will be this year's spot for the 25th Annual Pumpkin Festival presented by ZIPPO and Let it Shine, Inc. Hopefully, Laconia will be ready if there are any riotous college kids!
The Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce website has a webpage hyperlink for the new look of the Pumpkin Festival, though there isn't much information on the site as of yet. Also, the Facebook page hasn't been changed from "Keene Pumpkin Festival" to "Laconia Pumpkin Festival," probably pending the permanence of the pumpkin festival in a new town. We can only hope that the festival can find a new home for family fun and the safe celebration of fall in the Lakes Region!
