Whether you're headed to Durham as a UNH freshman, Plymouth as a PSU newbie, Keene as a new kid on the block, or Dartmouth as a smarty pants first year, you’re sure to have questions about your new place in the world. From my perspective, I left the beautiful mountains of New Hampshire to venture off to New Jersey where I found a lot more uncertainty as well as a great homesickness for the views of the Granite State! I ended up transferring to a state school here in New Hampshire because of the things I was missing. For your first question that you’re dying to have answered, yes! We do provide student transport discounts! For the second, yes again! We have some advice for the college freshies of New Hampshire.
Mom Advice
First of all, when you head into your residence hall, meet your new roommate, and drop off all of your stuff, your mom is going to want to make your bed for you or help unpack your clothes. Chances are, you are so overwhelmed by the new things around you, the people, and the dining hall and the last thing you want is for your mom to help you unpack. Our advice is to let her help. She is going through the same changes you are and she needs to feel included in your life changes to be okay with everything. Let her unbox your set of mugs, hang your jeans in the closet, and unpack all the cool stuff you got with her at Bed Bath and Beyond. She will feel better for it. *wink face*
Friend Advice
Ice breaker activities are pretty lame… We admit it too! New Student Orientation is all about name games, hypnotist shows, and PG-rated parties in the student lounges. You’ll play ice breakers with your RA and all the other kids on your floor, ice breakers with your orientation leader, and ice breakers in your classrooms! You’ll get sick of the games, but if you pay close attention, you may meet some of your best friends for orientation week. Don’t skip out on the lame games to sit in your room and play Xbox just because your parents aren’t there to tell you to go out and interact! Whether you make the best friends of your life or a temporary friend to cling on to before you meet the real ones, you will tell stories of freshman orientation even as a senior!
Freshman Fifteen
For me, it was more than fifteen pounds. With a giant buffet room and specialty lattes at the Starbucks every Monday night, I gained a lot of weight missing home and being inactive. I don’t necessarily believe that fifteen was ever a statistically sound number. It was always just a great alliteration! But students who go to college tend to find that New Hampshire state school cafeteria food is pretty fantastic and plentiful! After a while, you will whine about how the food isn’t good anymore and opt for pizza and fries as your comfort food. Plus, the winter is cold and you eat a little more to stay warm! There’s nothing wrong with gaining a little freshman pounds (no particular number) since it’s a phenomenon everywhere!
Lastly…
Remember to have fun, continue to apply for college scholarships to keep your payments down after, and know that a feeling of uncertainty in school is only temporary. Once you have a routine, start reaching out to other people in your classes, and pull yourself out of your comfort zone with student organizations, you will be making the memories you’ll remember for the rest of your life! Good luck to the class of 2019!
