With the snow falling in droves outside our windows, all of us here at Lakes Region Airport Shuttle got to thinking: Is this actually a lot of snow? So we curled up with some hot chocolate and our footie pajamas, cracked open our laptops and decided to find out. Lucky for us, www.average-snowfall.com gave us all the information we needed.
Here in New Hampshire, one thing is for sure – we know snow. So it came as no surprise to us when we found out that the annual snowfall for the Lakes Region is 79.3 inches.
79.3 inches! That’s 254% more than the national average!
What’s surprising is, we actually have not gotten that much snow this winter – 9.9 inches in January and 8.4 inches in December pale in comparison to the usual average snowfall for these months (18.9 and 18.1 inches, respectively). With today’s storm coming at the very start of February, we’re on pace to hit the average for this month of 18.3 inches. Even then, we’ll still probably fall short of our usual winter projection unless another storm or two come along.
But this hot (or should we say cold) start most likely won’t hold a candle to the highest monthly snowfall ever in New Hampshire… a whopping 56.5 inches in February 1969! That’s over four feet of snow in a single month! And to think we’re complaining about shoveling this…
Of course, those four-plus feet were spread out over a single month. How about the 34 inches we got in a single day? April 13th, 1933 to be exact. We’re not sure our current snowblowers could even handle that.
So, as we watch the snow pile up on our walkways and front lawns, we know it's tempting to complain. It sure looks beautiful, but that driveway isn't going to plow itself. But just think... it could be worse!
