Winter Fun in the Lakes Region
Posted On: 10/30/2019
Winter just might be the best time to visit the Lakes Region in New Hampshire. The summers are fun, but the winters are unforgettable. The boardwalk at Weirs Beach may be empty, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had. In fact the mountains around New Hampshire’s Lakes Region were practically made for the winter. From skiing, snowmobiles, winter carnivals, sled dog racing, and more, the winter is when the Lakes Region truly comes alive.
Here are some of the best winter activities to check out:
Skiing
Whether you’re looking for skiing, snowboarding, tubing, or cross-country ski and snowshoeing trails the best spots in New England are all in the Lakes Region. Our favorite slopes include Gunstock Mountain Resort, Loon Mountain Resort, Attitash Mountain Resort, King Pine Ski Area, Wildcat Mountain, and Cannon Mountain. Loon and Gunstock also has the best cross-country ski trails. The Gunstock Mountain Resort offers 45 trails on a 1400-foot vertical drop!
Ice Fishing
Ice Fishermen and women converge on Lake Winnipesaukee from all over the world for the Great Rotary Ice Fishing Derby in Meredith, NH. Set up your ice shanty and compete for a grand prize of $15,000! Taking place in February, the Ice Fishing Derby also has prizes for largest fish in a number of categories.
Dog Sledding
Dog Sledding has become a favorite spectator sport in the Lakes Region. There are several race events throughout January and February hosted by the New England Sled Dog Club (racing since 1924). The Tamworth Sled & Skijor Race in Lake Chocorua is one of the longest running sprint races in the world and a thrill to see.
Ice Racing
What’s more heart pounding than ice-skating? How about car racing on ice? In Moultonborough, the Lakes Region Ice Racing Club oversees auto races on Berry or Lee Pond. Spectators watch as tire chains raise plumes of snow and roar around the ice track. Car races are held on Sundays throughout the winter when the ice is at least one foot thick.
The New England Pond Hockey Classic
Forget the NHL, the Lakes Region has real ice hockey the way it was meant to be played… on a pond. Hundreds of teams from across the county compete on the shores of Lakes Winnipesaukee for the highly coveted WinnipeHockey Cup. It’s become one of the biggest annual winter events in the Lakes Region.
Whether you live in Boston or Concord, make your way to the Lake Region for some winter fun this year. Lakes Region Airport Shuttle is the best way to get here with shuttle transportation all through the winter to locations throughout the Lakes Region.
