Childhood summers spent at Santa’s Village have really stayed with me. I remember that my dad’s favorite parts of the park were the Biblical ones with the vintage Chapel and wise men in a line by the lake. My mom loved any part of the park that made my brothers and me smile, especially putting our heads into the face holes of the standing gingerbread men so that she could take pictures of our caricatured bodies. We have millions of photos of ourselves at different ages taking photos of different spots in the park. But the park is different now than it was when I was a kid! However, it stills spreads that Christmas magic even in the summer heat!
Santa’s Village is appropriate for kids of any age. It’s open in the summer, autumn, and specific days in winter leading up to Christmas. Depending on the time of year, there are different performances and attractions to enjoy at the park. A few constant features are the fudge and candy shop, rides, visiting Santa in his home, and the Elf University! The Elf University was a feature my whole family loved. You go to the University building and receive a punch card. Then, to make sure you take the right way through the park, you go up to different elf statues with corresponding alphabet letters and stamp your card. Once you get all 26 of the elves in the park, you can win prizes! My mom used to love watching her kids get excited about the alphabet.
On the ride front, the Yule Log Flume is pretty much the first big ride upon entering the park. It’s a death-defying drop that makes your stomach flop! For my family, this was always the first feat of the day! Once we got passed this ride, we could do anything! We also loved the Himalaya Ride because it went around and around and because it had penguins all over it! My family also loved the Skyway Sleigh that would take us all around the park overhead of the traffic and craziness! This was my parents’ favorite because it gave them a chance to sit down! The Express Train around the park offered the same amenity but at a lower altitude.
The things that have changed are the amount of food shops available in the park. I used to love the Pizza Emporium next to the antique cars and the Bake Shop where we could ice our own gingerbread men and women. But there are whole cafeteria seating options in the park now as well as more rollercoasters for adult rides. There is also a Santa themed waterpark that is great for Christmas in July!
If you are visiting the Lakes Region this summer, it is worth it to take your family up to Jefferson for a day! General admission is $30 for everyone aged 4 and older. It’s about an hour and a half north of the lake but it makes for a really fun day of alphabet elves and Christmas fun!
