We recently asked the daughter of one of the Lakes Region Airport Shuttle drivers a question about her summer out of school. We asked: “What is one thing you HAVE to do before you go back to school?” Her answer was the Polar Caves Park! This place is an inexpensive trip for family fun and exploration in Rumney, NH. Let’s talk a little bit about the details of this place and see if we can find out why this kid loves it so much!
Formed by a glacier, this park is home to nine different caves with pathways, boardwalks, and underground granite chambers that make you feel like Indiana Jones raiding the lost arc… except without the snakes. It’s a hyped up hike over footbridges, boulders, and caverns where you can feed baby deer at the end. Past reviewers of this site have said how surprised they are about the freedom they have when they go explore the caves. It’s a free walk with signs pointing to places like “smuggler’s cave” and “orange crush.” The names of caves and the sights of them inspire a lot of creativity and storytelling in small kids! Share the Latin derived verb "spelunking" with them that literally means to cave wander, and you may also raise some IQ points! There are lots of positives to the Polar Caves!
Prices to get into the caves are very inexpensive. Kids from 4-10 cost $11.50 each, people over 11 are $16.50, and kids under 4 are free! It’s a pretty affordable venture for families to try, it offers good exercise, and it’s just really cool! It also looks like there is a station about panning for gold as well as a gift shop where those children who love to collect rocks would literally go crazy!
On your hike, definitely wear sneakers, you might want to layer since the insides of the caves tend to be about 55 degrees, and don’t bring a stroller unless you want to do some carriage pull ups all the way up the cave stairs. The website urges visitors to stay the whole day and have fun! They expect a self-guided tour of the caves to last about two hours. The website also offers ideas of places to lodge and eat if you’re staying in the area. Plain Jane’s is a great place for breakfast for the family. But if you’re headed up there with a group of adult friends, I highly recommend the Six Burner Bistro for lunch or dinner after your hike. The food is awesome!
