Today’s Lakes Region Blog is about a place where the Lakes Region Airport Shuttle would be glad to give you a lift! From one form of transportation to another, we’d be happy to escort you to Café Lafayette. It is one of 12 moving dinner trains in North America and this one is located off exit 32 on I-93 right in the White Mountain region! Imagine enjoying a full five-course meal while taking a luxurious ride through the scenic White Mountains. It’s definitely a trip worth making!
Café Lafayette started up in 1989, though the railway and trains are older than the service. They have three operating cars including “Indian Waters,” “Algonquin,” and The “Granite Eagle.” “Indian Waters” is a restored car from 1924 that used to be used in New York Central. The other two cars are from the 1950s and were used in Canada or from St. Louis to San Antonio. To read a little more about their history, you can read this article from The Wall Street Journal that featured Café Lafayette last year!
Looking at the website, you can see a special on the left hand side called “Wild Game Night!” At first glance it sounds like you might be playing a zany game of bingo on a moving dinner train. However, that is not the case… The website is referring to wild meat that is not often tasted in the New England region. July 24th will be a night of alligator meat, elk, and opah! Sounds like a pretty interesting day to ride the train!
Dining prices are dependent on where you choose to sit on the train. You still get all the same number of courses whether you’re on the Main or Dome levels. For adults, pricing ranges between $80- $95 a meal. For kids 6-11, prices range between $60- $75. The train staff advise you to arrive 5-10 minutes before boarding, You can cancel up to 24 hours before your reservation but your credit card won’t be fully charged until you’ve gotten to the trip. And for the most part, tables hold 4 people so in the event that 2-person couples sit on the train, they will be put together. It sounds like a good way to meet new people on the train!
