It’s a sport you get the hang of at Girl Scout camp when you’re at your first sleep away camp with strangers who want you to sit in a banana and row yourself around with a hideous rubber cap over your hair. This was my first experience with kayaking, and yet I still loved the freedom of sitting in my own kayak and gliding on top of the water like some sort of water god. I’ve kayaked in the ocean, numerous lakes, and even a gulf in Martha’s Vineyard when our method of reaching a sailboat was just paddling out to it (Full disclosure: I had to be roped in to even get near the boat entry point).
Located steps away from Meredith Bay and some awesome drinks at Church Landing, this activity center offers rentals, lessons, charters, and a full shop of boating supplies! Rent a stand up paddleboard, kayaks, or canoes and aqua cycles for the whole family to go together! The rental prices are set up for half days, full days, and single hour rentals. It’s a great place to choose if you want to take part in water transport rentals and grab a nice meal at the Mill Falls marketplace afterwards.
This watersports center is a little rougher than the one in Meredith but also more triumphant because of the task! Feet First Watersports offers wakeboarding, water skiing, and barefooting lessons. They promise that you will be skiing confidently in any of the sports within a one-hour lesson or your hour is free. That’s a pretty hefty promise but it makes me want to see if it’s true!
You can also enjoy guided tours in kayaking if you head to Monroe, New Hampshire! In the winter they offer guided snow shoeing tours, which I imagine are just as fun since you see all those great animal tracks and feel like you’re gliding on frozen water. The kayak tours are between 2 and 4 hours long and are offered to families, groups of women, men’s retreats, couples, and special customized tours with picnic lunches! All you need to bring is your moderate to advanced swimming ability and your love for nature!
I chose this next adventure tour because it’s white water rafting and kayaking! It’s a class for 1-3 days that teaches participants how to safely white water raft and kayak with etiquette, safety measures, and strokes and maneuvers to get you through the rough parts! This group won Best of New Hampshire in 2014 and is a great way to get students/camp counselors/families working together. If you choose the three-day expedition you can stay in their new yurts on site! Definitely survey their website for all their other lake traveling options.
Let us know which of these places is your favorite or which ones you plan to visit next! We love the Lakes and White Mountain Regions of our state and hope you get to see the very best of it! Subscribe to us here at LR Lately for more updates!
