Posted On: 01/18/2016
The Ice Castles are opening this weekend on January 22nd! The icy caves, peaks, and slides will all be located right off exit 32 on 93 North at The Hobo Railroad. This place is perfect for a smart phone photo opp with no filters needed! It’s great for winter lovers of all ages and is a great place to stop if you’re enjoying a weekend on the slopes in that area already.
We’re sharing some of our photos from last year, ticket info about the Ice Castles, and information on how to enlist the Lakes Region Airport Shuttle to drive you and your crew up to Lincoln for a weekend of winter fun!
First… Some Advice
We were lucky enough to get to enjoy the Ice Castles last year and they were incredible. The ice designs, lights, music, and excited energy of all the participants was enough to make us want to go again! However, we didn’t follow directions quite as well as we should have… On the website, you get more than just a BUY TICKETS HERE button:
“Dress for the cold! The Ice Castle is outside. So the temps in the Ice Castle are the same as outside. Buy Tickets before you arrive. When you buy your tickets online we’ll send you an email with a unique QR code. We can scan the code off your phone or printed on paper.”
Firstly, we didn’t buy our tickets online before we got there. Waiting in the lobby to get our tickets and gather our group was seriously stressful. We would have made it so much easier on ourselves had we purchased beforehand.
Secondly, we didn’t realize just how cold it would be inside the castles! With the dry, ice air blowing on your face, it feels much colder inside the castles than it does outside. Make sure that when you go, you’ve got a couple of pairs of wool socks on, a very warm pair of gloves, and have your chapstick in your coat pocket or closeby! It is so dry in there that your lips will chap very quickly. *Warning: Fleece lined leggings alone are not warm enough. (Approved and tested by the LRAS)*
Ticket Prices
You can purchase tickets to visit the Ice Castles in half hour increments. A half hour for someone over 12 is $15.95, and $11.95 for anyone under 12. I believe the half hour increments are new this year because before, our group could decide when we wanted to exit. It will be interesting to see how they handle the time crunch with customers this year. Traffic inside the castles may be less rough.
We hope you get a chance to visit the Ice Castles and follow our cautionary tale!
