The earliest record of ice fishing was with the Chippewa Indians who populated regions like Ontario, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan as early as 100 A.D. It wasn’t until the 1980s that tiny houses were created to make the sport of ice fishing more comfortable and enjoyable. With the development of ice fishing as a sport, it is much less about feeding one’s community than it is now about catching as many fish as possible, winning fishing contests, and enjoying a great meal out on the ice. The 37th Annual Meredith Rotary Club Fishing Derby will be taking place on Meredith Bay February 13th & 14th and giving away over $50,000 in prizes!

There are so many rules about fishing in the derby. There are rules about the length of the fish accepted, how long participants have to weigh-in fish for the contest, age requirements, and fishing licenses. Participants are prohibited from entering salmon, bass, or brown trout because they are endangered species. Other fish requirements are:
Fish | Minimum Requirement |
---|---|
Rainbow Trout | 17 Inches |
Lake Trout | 22 Inches |
Cusk | 22 Inches |
Pickerel | 22 Inches |
White Perch | 14 Inches |
Yellow Perch | 12 Inches |
Black Crappie | 13 Inches |

The Rotary is offering money rewards to participants with the longest fish in each category. The top five fishermen for each category can win between $50 to $250. Then, the Rotary puts the names of the first prize participants from each category to see who wins the third prize of $3,000, the second place prize of $5,000, or the first place prize at $15,000! Participants can also enter to win prizes for the heaviest catches of each angler category.
We’re offering shuttle rides to the Meredith Bay if you should have a group who wants to go fish for the top prize! Book a ride with us today for that weekend of winter fun on the lake. In the meantime, follow the Meredith Rotary Club on Facebook for more information on their event!
