Now that we know travel weather will be in our favor this season, a little bit of stress has been lifted off our shoulders. However, better weather means more travelers and more travelers means more traffic. If you’re driving or flying with young ones this weekend and expect a lot of waiting time, we have some games you can play on the road! Even if you don’t have kids in your station wagon on the way to grandma’s, these games can be enjoyed by all ages.
CHALLENGE: See if you can get your family away from their phones for a little while.
The Alphabet Game
This is a game my family and I used to play driving on the highway to get to my grandparents’ house when I was a kid. Driving down the highway you go from A-Z searching for words on road signs, bumper stickers, and graffiti. It’s a great game for elementary-aged kids who are in the “learning to read stage”. They’re so excited to show what they know! Letters like X and Z can be difficult to find but my family has been lucky enough to get through the whole thing on 93 Northbound before. If we can do it, you can do it.
I’m Thinking of a Movie”
This was another staple car game for me growing up. It’s a lot like 20 Questions but we wouldn’t always enforce a question limit. The person who thinks of the movie has to think of one he/she thinks everyone else in the car has seen. Everyone else can ask questions about plot, setting, genre, whether it’s live action, whether it’s a cartoon, which company made the film BUT they all have to be “yes” or “no” questions.
Endorsed by Ellen
Ellen Degeneres is the queen of mobile game applications. If you want to put your iPhone or Android to good use without letting it alienate you from the rest of the car, play Heads Up! The user takes his/her phone and holds it on their forehead. The app displays a bunch of nouns, proper nouns, songs, and verbs that the rest of the players have to act out, sing, or give clues for. It’s similar to charades and you can purchase new decks of cards to create more gameplay. Once the round is over, the game plays back a video of the players trying to get the “phone holder” to learn the right answer. That’s one of the best parts since your friends usually look like crazy people.
On a Flight
If you’re looking for in-flight games for kids that will keep them quiet and occupied, Madlibs are the best. Sure, you’ll get lots of laughter but it’s a great learning game and your kids will be excited to have played with you on their trip.
