Posted On: 03/07/2015
“New England runs on Dunkin.” Dunkin Donuts has made a slogan based on the fact that New Englanders cannot function without caffeinated beverages. But besides the big, corporate coffee shops to help us do every task, New England has its small business coffee shops with rustic atmospheres, fair trade blends, and neighborhood chitchat. Dunkins may be correct about our need for coffee, but I prefer my small town coffee places to the drive through. . . My favorite thing about the small town coffee shops is that when I have time, I can use the special artisan mugs they keep for the special “stay and write on your laptop” customers. This activity keeps me from littering my back car seat with styrofoam cups. I recently learned that I can get mugs like this for my own kitchen from Healing Touch Pottery in Sandown!
The company started in 2009 by Donna E. Rollins and her husband Randall Rollins. The company has a full staff of ceramic artists who create pieces to sell. The artists make about five different styles of mugs in five different color palates. Each piece also has a stone in its handle representing a kind of abstract attribute that gives strength to its drinker. For example, the artists make a mug called the “mother mug.” Its stone is called the Mother of Pearl and its material shows growth and formation.
From the look of the website, it seems as though you can buy these mugs at stores all across the country! People from New England to California can enjoy artisan mugs by New Hampshire craftsmen. More specifically, people all across the state have tons of places to buy these. Which is good news for me because I’m writing this blog out of envy of my mother’s Healing Touch Pottery mug she received from a teacher at her school. I’m especially in love with the mugs with the aqua colors that look like the paint is dripping down into the paint color on the bottom of the mug. It’s the ridges on the mugs that make them look rustic and like they’re from New England.
I’m also interested in this company because their mission is mainly about providing high-quality products made in the USA. My family tries the Made in America Challenge Diane Sawyer started on ABC News in 2011. The Made in America Challenge has asked Americans to spend a certain amount of money on American products each year in order to create more jobs. My family spends the goal amount every year at Christmas, and this product is a great one to give to friends and family at that time.
