Have you ever been on a layover where you get off the plane and realize you need to take a train car, a bus, and a long hike through Middle Earth to get to your next terminal? Well, we have! There are so many airlines and so many more travelers now that expansion in airports is a given. It comes at a cost to customers who have to travel between flights. A recent article from CNN says that we may soon need to take a boat to our terminals as well!
Expansion to the High Seas!
Osaka and Hong Kong both have airports with artificial islands for expansion and a recent proposal has just been suggested for the London Britannia Airport. The island would be built on the Thames River and offer six new runways. According to the CNN article, the proposal has already met some questions. People wonder if the naval-style crafts wouldn’t be appropriate for use of extra lanes. However, their decks are too small for commercial jet planes. The project would cost about $63 billion, so clearly more questions are coming.
When it comes to those pesky Middle Earth layovers, the idea for inner airport travel is through underwater railways. The travel would be at top speed but you’d be going a lot farther than just terminal 22A to 147D. Then maybe we’d call it the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea layover.
Floating Ports in the USA
Another proposal has been brought about for the San Diego airport as well. The project there was at an estimated $20 billion and hasn’t been spoken of widely. The technical aspects of the projects and their pricey tags have generated a lot of no’s.
