Living in New Hampshire, we are so lucky. We can visit the mountains in an hour or less, the beaches are a short ride down 93 and through 101 East, and we don’t live far from major cities like New York and Boston. Living in this area, we have tons of opportunities to see concerts, art exhibits, and even musical theatre. But best of all, you can hire someone else to take you to Broadway in Boston...like us! Read today's blog for some info on the great theatre coming to Boston in the next couple of months.
2017 Season
The two touring shows coming to Boston this January are Cabaret and Something Rotten! These shows have very different tones so it’s good to know what you’re getting into before you book a ride and order your tickets:
This show is all about the ultimate bard, William Shakespeare, and how he invented the idea of “the musical.” This show is great for people who know a lot about musical theatre since it refers to contemporary musicals often. However, it’s also a great laugh for people who haven’t seen a lot of theatre before. The music is catchy, the dancing is elaborate, and the lines are hilarious. This show will be playing from January 17th-29th at the Boston Opera House. Check out Boston-theatre.com for some ticket prices.
Set in the Kit Kat Club in Berlin during the Nazi regime, American novelist, Clifford Bradshaw, visits looking for inspiration for his next book. In the club he meets Sally Bowles, a British club dancer and eccentric woman. After she is fired from her job, she follows the novelist to his apartment where they kindle a kind of romance. Around their relationship, the rest of the world is being affected by the Nazi regime. The message of the show is poignant, entertaining, and terrifying all at the same time. This is a must-see when it returns to the Boston Opera House from January 31st to February 12th. Check Boston-theatre.com for prices.
The American Repertory Theater
Though it isn’t exactly Broadway in Boston, we have the scoop on a performance you might not want to miss in Cambridge this February. James Earl Jones will be starring in a production of The Night of the Iguana at the Loeb Theater starting February 18th. How often do we get to see incredible stars like James Earl Jones perform in our area? The show, written by Tennessee Williams, “follows a hotel proprietress and the scandal-soaked Southern preacher who turns up on her veranda. A Nantucket portrait artist traveling with her ancient grandfather, a bus full of fuming Texan college administrators, and a party of vacationers collide in this drama about how far we travel to outrun the demons within” (ART).
