Posted On: 01/11/2016
Since 1883, hockey has been a recognized sport in the United States. The first organized game happened at St. Paul’s school in Concord! The Black Ice Pond Hockey Tournament’s mission is to give more opportunity for local ice skating as well as to help fund improvements to Concord facilities in remembrance of that great, first game. From January 29th to the 31st, this tournament will continue its tradition in Concord at White Park!
Find Your Team
Teams had until December 1st to register themselves for the games. Each team is composed of a minimum of four people or a maximum of seven people and is split up by age. There are the teams with men under 18, women’s open, men over 18, men 35 and older, and men 50 and older. The divisions are each sponsored by companies like the 603 Brewery, Fairpoint, Atlas Fireworks, and the Merrimack County Savings Bank. Some teams are coming from as far at Virginia, Florida, and Connecticut to take part in the games! 93 teams are competing that weekend so there are plenty of opportunities to find out who your favorites are.
Food, Drink, and There’s An App for That!
One of the coolest parts of this event this year is that the 603 Brewery has created a special beer just for the Black Ice Hockey Tournament called The Black Ice American Ale! It’s described as:
“an Ale version of the American Lager, that beer pours a golden straw color with a stronghead and ample lacing. Cold conditioning lends to slightly sweet malt notes and a subtle hop on the nose. Delicate, sweet fruit notes with a faint biscuit and nutty finish. Whether skating or watching the game, Black Ice is the perfect beer to bring along. We remind all players to please skate responsibly!”
Besides this treat, there will be a limited amount of vendors selling food to participants as well as a shuttle taking people back and forth to downtown Concord to eat at the restaurants there. Discounts and specials are available to those playing in the games!
Besides the awesome food, the hockey tournament has a new app download so you can keep up with the scores on the days when you aren’t there or when you head downtown to Main Street for lunch. With a specialty beer and the app, this tournament has been tailor made to the ice hockey audience. If you’re still not convinced this is the game for you, check out their promotional video on Vimeo!
