July 4, 1776 was the date in which the Continental Congress wrote their grievances to King George III, and their proclamation for a revolution in the form of The Declaration of Independence . Whether or not this document was ever actually opened by King George is in question, but its conception helped the leaders of the United States firmly decide their beliefs in human ethics and the freedom of a people to govern themselves freely. Today, we celebrate and remember our freedom with fireworks, barbecues, outdoor activities, and parades! Though our celebrations are very different from the original July 4th where the best sport was in quippy words, we enjoy our families, friends, food, and fireworks on this day with pride and patriotism!
It’s important to know what is happening in the Lakes Region this weekend so you can plan your outings and firework viewings around the Lakes Region calendar. We received our information from The Laker website!
Starting on July 1st, there are a series of events happening around historical figures. On the 1st, there is an event at the Moultonborough Library where George Morrison will speak on the topic of Benedict Arnold: Patriot or Traitor? There is also a talk about Abraham Lincoln with portrayer Steve Wood who will discuss the life of Lincoln, The Gettysburg Address, and his run for President. This event happens at 3pm at the Meredith Bay Colony Club. Both are free and open to the public. You can learn more about these events by visiting the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce webpage!
Starting on July 4th is a foot race in downtown Center Harbor. Registration starts at 8am and the race at 10am. The Center Harbor parade starts at 2pm, their bandstand concert starts at 7pm (they request you bring your own blankets and/or chairs for outside seating), and they have fireworks over the Center Harbor Bay at dusk! Wolfeboro also has their parade at 10am, and fireworks at dusk over the Wolfeboro Bay. Then there is the Gunstock Craft Fair at the Gunstock Mountain Resort on July 4th and 5th!
