Whenever I give someone from out of town a meal recommendation in New Hampshire, it’s either to a Common Man restaurant or a local diner. I didn’t realize this fact until recently when I was walking down Main Street in Plymouth and a couple from Germany stopped me on their drive down the street. They asked me for the closest place to great really awesome food that wouldn’t be too expensive. Between the slight language barrier and my haste in walking home, I babbled out names of three different restaurants really close, looked up their addresses on Google Maps, and wished them a great visit in the United States! But the rest of my walk home was full of analytics from my answers. I had told them to try Annie's Overflow in Holderness, the Main Street Diner down the street, and Foster's Boiler Room at the Common Man Inn and Spa. All of those places were either diners or served inexpensive comfort food. That’s when I realized how ingrained diners are into the New England lifestyle…
But it isn’t just New England, is it? There is a whole show on The Food Network devoted to the influence of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. Guy Fieri, the bleached, spikey haired Food Network star buries his chops in burgers, American chop suey, and fusion food every season from restaurants in states all over the country. Maybe there is a reason why these locations are taking over the world as quickly as they are. The food is delicious, the waiters are nice, and it's a place where the community can brag about their great local food.
We’ll share with you the one show that has been on Guy’s show from New Hampshire and it’s called The Red Arrow Diner in downtown Manchester. This place is tiny, but man does it deliver! Part of the reason why this place is famous is because Adam Sandler, who attended Central High School in Manchester, used to eat there before he was a famous SNL star. Since Sandler, there have been many famous patrons eating at The Red Arrow like the Barenaked Ladies, several presidents, and Guy Fieri! Seats at the restaurant have plaques with names of famous people who once sat at the same red booths or stools. Since it’s a 24-hour diner, it’s best to go to this location late at night when no one is there since it’s hard to get a seat during the day. There is a second location in Milford and a new location just opened on Route 28 in Londonderry. The newest location is larger and includes all the same great menu items as the original.
If you're still a big fan of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives or just looking for a great New England restaurant, be sure to check out the Red Arrow on your next trip down to the airport. Whether you choose the new location or the classic location, you’re libel to have an awesome meal! Follow the LR Lately Blog for updates every Tuesday and Thursday!
