It may be a little too early to start thinking about spring weather, but since we’re all dreaming about it anyway, the Lakes Region Airport Shuttle Travel Blog has chosen today to talk about a certain attraction available to “Lakes Region-ers” in a few months. That attraction is a source of exercise New Hampshire-ites don’t get to enjoy as often as Americans living on flatter land. The WOW Trail in Laconia, a paved trail adjacent to the Laconia railway for bikes and walking, hopes “to promote, design, build and maintain a nine mile recreational path through the City of Laconia as a part of the regional rail trail network that will one day connect Meredith to Franklin” (wowtrail.org).
The trail, formed by Laconia City Councilor Fred Toll in 2001, was originally called Laconia Trails with Rails Exploratory Committee. What is particularly amazing about this endeavor is the goal the committee has set for itself to ultimately create a nine-mile trail from Elm Street in Lakeport to Weirs Beach, and then on to Meredith which can connect the downtown area of Laconia to Meredith. A project like this can instill more Lakes Region pride in our residents, more tourism for the area, and a new attraction for schools to take children for bike riding outings and events.
As the Lakes Region Airport Shuttle blogger and a lifelong New Hampshire resident, it’s easy for me to express my love for a heated car as my chosen form of transportation. However, a recent trip to southern California and a surprise 20-mile bike ride after more than a decade of driving limited to automobiles, changed the way I think about outside recreation and the way I move. Sure, California has something over New Hampshire, they have 350 sunny days out of 365 a year so it’s much easier to do park and trail upkeep through the year. But just because New Hampshire has more unpredictable weather doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to enjoy our opportunities for hiking, biking, and enjoying our surroundings. That’s why endeavors like those from the WOW Trail are doing such a great thing for the Lakes Region.
The WOW Trail is always accepting donations for their expansion goals as well as volunteers for trail upkeep. For more information, head to their website or Facebook page to learn about upcoming events! In the meantime, check back with our Travel Blog for everything the Lakes Region has to offer!
