One of the elements maple syrup producers of New Hampshire are waiting for is the rate of warmth that will be coming with the spring. That warmth will determine the rate of sap coming out of the tapped maple trees for the maple farmers in New England! If the rate is high maple syrup will be less expensive, but if the rate is low then maple syrup will be a serious commodity. But no matter the cost, I will be attending Maple Weekend in New Hampshire for the weekend of March 28th and 29th supporting local farmers! My maple syrup addiction is far too advanced to worry about the hole in my wallet!
Maple Weekend has been a tradition in my family for a long time. My family loves trying new maple syrup farms every year with maple syrup ice cream, maple syrup sale products, and tours of maple syrup houses. There is nothing like the smell of the warm maple sugar houses on a pre-spring morning in New Hampshire. But meeting the farmers whose families have been in the business for generations is also a cool part of visiting those farms. For the weekend, the farm owners give tours of their syrup houses and explain just how many gallons of sap it takes to make all the bottles of syrup they sell! The number is very surprising! I won’t tell you so you can find out for yourself...
Another one of my favorite parts about visiting the maple farms is buying products from the farms to use in my cooking! One of my favorite products is maple syrup barbecue sauce. I usually buy it at Folsoms Sugar House in Chester, NH! Their general store is fabulous and has a lot of cooking ingredients made with maple syrup for meals after maple weekend! I’m pretty proud of the loot I acquire at Folsoms. This time, we might try Just Maple in Tilton. It’s located at Green Acres Farm and provides a lot of the maple syrup to stores across the state.
One thing about traveling around for Maple Weekend is that it isn’t the same at every venue. Each farm house offers a different grade of syrup, different products made with the syrup, and sometimes whole restaurants during the season to showcase their syrup products. My family likes using its lazy Sundays to journey out to the farms and enjoy a “mapley morning” by the hot maple sheds. It's events like this that make people really excited for spring and glad for the transition in between that gives us such delicious sweets from nature!
